Notes for William Riehl...

William O. “Bill” Riehl is the son of August Riel and Emily Meuller.  William changed his surname from Riel to Riehl on 1 Apr 1912.  William was born 25 Feb 1890 in Russia/Poland Border.  He immigrated with his parents at the age of 2 yrs in 1892.  His parents had four more child in Brooklyn, Martha (1892-1968), Herman (1893-1894 ), August (1895- 1895), Frederick (1900-1922 ).

After the death of William’s father, his mother Emily remarried to a man named Mr. Shematat and had two children with him,  May ( - ) and Edith (1902- ).  She soon left him and was then found renting a home on South Main Street in Dolgeville, Herkimer, NY in 1910 with four children, William, Martha, Frederick, and Edith.  They were all listed with the surname “Reil.”  In 1920 she was still residing in Dolgeville but on Van Burren Street, now with Freddie Reihl, Martha Pohlman, Gertrude Pohlman, Julious Pohlman and Irving Pohlman.   I do not know what happened to Edith.  A family record was found stating Frederick was very sick (TB & Diabetes) and died in New Haven, CT in 1922, he was only 22 yrs.

After 1920 Emilia must have gone to New Haven, Connecticut with her daughter Martha Pohlman and died there [speculation only -  Her daughters’ children were born there and her son Frederick died there in 1922, by 1930 Martha Pohlman was back in New Haven, CT with her husband and had more children].

For further Pohlman/Rhiel Family information visit June Chan’s “Pohlman-Riehl Family” she has much more information on these families than posted here.  She has done an excellent job on her collection of vital information and source information.  Thank you June!
